Looking at the work of others can be very inspiring. But sometimes it can be discouraging too. You can’t help but think about your own work and do that very thing that you shouldn’t do; compare yourself. I work on paper. Often small pieces but nothing larger than an 8×10 drawing on smooth Bristol board. Everybody else it seems work on these epic size canvases or drawing sheets. Which leave me wondering, is it really all about size? Is that what makes a work of art more impressive than others? The sheer magnitude of it?
I would say nope! I follow someone on Instagram that mainly does these amazing works of art on small pieces of paper, post-it size. You may be aware of who I’m talking about cause she is pretty popular on IG but yeah, size don’t matter when it comes to art. I love it in all sizes! 🙂

Only in some people’s eyes. But try not to worry about it. Small works of art have a long history. One of my favourite places that I always begged my father to take me to was a museum called The Wallace Collection, that had miniature paintings. Thanks for the encouragement Val. If I could paint I would probably try my hand at doing portrait miniatures. Those are lovely examples on Wikipedia.

I work from tiny, a few centimetres, to 2 x 2 metres. It depends on the subject and materials. Keep on doing what you are doing.

Maybe you’re just personally more impressed by larger works? For myself, I guess I assume artists working on larger artworks must be selling well. (Otherwise where do they keep their unsold art…? 🙂 Your artwork is beautiful and so painstakingly rendered larger works would take a long time to complete, but I wouldn’t call them less impressive than larger artworks.

It’s not that I’m impressed, it’s what I mostly see at least in the galleries and art shows in my area. So it makes me wonder is there a preference for larger works?

Maybe. Maybe it would be worth your while to talk to gallery and art show curators and staff. Maybe they can direct you to venues that deal with smaller art pieces.

You work may be small but it is powerful. You have to do what is right for you.
