I have been literally drawing a blank on ideas for my next drawing. A fellow artist told me it’s probably best to take a break, so that’s what I’ve been doing but I’m not taking a break from being creative. While I’m recharging my battery for pointillism, I carved up a few designs for some mini block prints. Nothing too fancy, just some simple designs based off of lotuses and spiritual symbols. In the picture above from left to right the symbols are Dao, Om and Gye Nyame, which is a African adinkra symbol for the supremacy of God. Surprisingly I didn’t get too frustrated while carving these so I’m claiming them as officially my first mini block prints. 😃
I love these, particularly the Om one.
I took a break from blogging recently (just back, today) and found myself drawing instead! My sister gave me a set of brush pens which I’d never used before, they were – are – great fun. And because I didn’t ‘have to’ do anything, I really loosened up. I think the best thing is to take a break and do something different, to give your mind a chance to loosen up, so if you’re drawing too much, do something different, if you’re gardening too much, do something different. Our creativity is not asleep while we take a break, rather it’s growing quietly.

I have to keep in mind that I need to take a break and do something different every now and then. I got it in my mind that as an artist I’m suppose to just draw, draw, draw endlessly. I feel guilty at times for doing something different but I have to remind myself that even some of my favorite artists take breaks and do something else creative, like sculpting. After “Davina” I’ll be doing some more carving. I just got a commission for a 12×12 mandala, so I’ll be working on that next. That will give me some time to think about my next drawing.

I disagree when you hit a drawing block draw through it! Inspiration finds you with a pencil in your hand. Even if your just doodling. My friend recently suggested drawing blind. Its cool and relaxing to see what comes up.

Actually I tried that for two days with just sketching, I only got irritated. It was while I was carving the designs for my block prints that a few ideas came to me. Sometimes I just need a break or a switch to some other creative activity to get some ideas flowing. Thanks for the suggestion though. 😊
